The Role Of Imran Khan In Regional Geopolitics
Imran Khan served as the prime minister of Pakistan from August 2018 to 2022, and during his regime, he was responsible for leading the country in a positive direction in terms of geopolitics.
His role in Regional Geopolitics has been marked by efforts to foster diplomatic relations and engage in regional cooperation. Imran Khan has thus been a powerful force in terms of that, his government was able to restore relations with many countries and he led his country in a positive direction.
In this blog, we’ll be diving into what Imran Khan’s role was in regional geopolitics.
1. Relations With China: Regional Geopolitics
First on the list is China. Imran Khan was successful enough to cement good relations with its neighboring country China.
It was Imran Khan who said that China has “given us a chance” to through the China economic border. He met the Chinese Prime minister as well and discussed more about CPEC.
Both leaders were happy to meet each other and discuss the many projects that they signed together for economic prosperity and Regional Geopolitics.
China being our best friend was a great opportunity for Imran Khan and he benefitted from it. During his tenure, he was able to further deepen this Regional Geopolitics.
2. Meeting With Donald Trump
It was his meeting with Trump that caused waves.
Back in 2019, both leaders had a meeting where they discussed issues like Kashmir, economic growth, and other issues. One of the most important issues being discussed was the issue of Afghanistan and the Taliban regime.
It was therefore a very successful meeting and both the leaders discussed bilateral relations and Imran Kahn even invited Donald Trump.
This meeting was hugely popular as it was the first time in history that a Pakistani leader decided to talk about the issues prevailing in Afghanistan as well
Imran Khan also made clear how he wanted a balanced Regional Geopolitics with the USA.
3. Imran Khan and Erdogan
Imran Khan was also able to visit and meet famous Turkish Leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan back in 2019.
The two leaders have always been on the same page and one of the regional geopolitics things about both these leaders was that they were on the same page for Palestine and Islamophobia.
Imran Khan was able to develop good relations with Turkey and both leaders were seen many times on different occasions and at different summits.
Both the leaders were also united on France’s hypocrisy and Islamophobic rules for Muslim women.
4. 3-Day Visit To Saudi Arabia
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have always been on good terms with each other but it was Imran Khan who further improved and enhanced these bilateral regional geopolitics relations.
Imran Khan along with his wife visited Saudi Arabia where both the leaders discussed and signed agreements addressing the treatment of criminals and crime and both of them signed agreements regarding combating drug trafficking. Therefore, making it a supreme coordination.
Both Imran Khan and Muhammad Bin Salman signed agreements regarding infrastructure, power, transportation, water and financing projects.
Imran Khan visited 3 times during his tenure and he also addressed his concern over the inefficiency of OIC.
It must also be noted that Saudi Arabia has on multiple occasions provided aid to Pakistan.
5. Imran and UN
How can we not include Imran Khan’s speech in the UN’s General Assembly?
It was one of the most historic milestones for Pakistan and people all over the country were beaming with joy as they watched their leader talk and address the council with such grace and poise.
In his speech, he addressed the many issues in Pakistan and climate change, he was one of the first leaders to openly talk about climate change.
He also discussed how India and Indian media for years have been perpetuating a false narrative against Pakistan.
Furthermore, he also discussed the ever-growing change in the atmosphere for Muslims. He addressed Islamophobia and the representation of Islam.
Besides this, he very openly spoke for the rights of the people of Kashmir and Palestine.
To this day, it is one of the most inspiring speeches in the history of the UN.
6. Meeting With Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin met Imran Khan amid the Ukrainian invasion.
The leaders of the two countries discussed the main aspects of bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on current regional topics, including development in South Asia.
Furthermore, both the leaders focused on regional devolvement, Afghanistan, Islamophobia and a major gas pipeline deal that Pakistan was seeking to finalize with Russia.
However, this deal wasn’t that successful as his regime was overturned.
7. Visit To Iran
Another very famous visit of Imran Khan was with the Iranian prime minister, Hasan Rouhani.
Both countries discussed the complex issue of the ties with Saudi Arabia. Pakistan and Iran have always been on a good and positive page. Both the leaders discussed the issues concerning Muslims and islamophobia.
