Honouring Arfa Karim: A Timeless Legacy
2nd February 1995 was the day when Arfa Karim was born in Faisalabad. It was a normal day, both the parents were happy but little did they know, that this young baby girl would one day become one of the most famous and celebrated names in her country.
This young girl had eyes beaming with dreams, and thoughts racing with ideas but she was meant to live a shirtless yet timeless time in this world.
Early Life
Arfa Karim Randhawa was born on the 2nd of February 1995 in Faisalabad. She was born into a middle-class family. Her father was an army officer and life was comfortable at the Randhawa house.
Early on, her parents used to spend time with her and used to notice that their daughter would respond more quickly compared to others. Arfa was more close to her mother and it was her mother who initially noticed that their child was different from other children.
As new parents, they were often confused because Arfa would start responding at a young age. It was at the age of 4 when they noticed that she had started operating and using computers.
It came to them as a shock, they were bewildered and astonished to see their four daughters using a high-tech computer.
Therefore, it was then that they were sure that Arfa was different!
Child Prodigy
Arfa Karim was undoubtedly a child prodigy. When she started her education, it was very clear that she was a bright student.
Studies were never a big deal for her as she used to ace all her exams, but it was a world of computers that caught her heart.
She used to love spending time on her computers and her parents soon realised that their daughter for computers. She was only 5 years old when she demanded her father a computer.
Her father granted her that wish and bought her a computer. Her father noticed and observed her extraordinary skills in using the computer and decided to enroll her in an IT education and training institute there home in Faisalabad.
She was excellent and excelled in her studies. The institute then advised her parents that she must go for professional Microsoft certification.
In 2004, after a few months of continuous study in summer break, she successfully passed the Microsoft certification exam and became the youngest Microsoft certified professional (MCP) just at the age of 9.
This not only surprised her family but also bewildered the entire Microsoft team as well. They couldn’t believe that a young girl at the age of 9 could pass an exam that many adults with years of hard work could not pass.
Meeting With Bill Gates
It was then that she caught the attention of Bill Gates.
Bill Gates who was the founder and CEO of Microsoft was awestruck by this young girl who was able to do what many could not do. He invited Arfa Karim and her parents to the headquarters of Microsoft in Redmond.
It was this meeting of her with Bill Gates that moved the nation. Bill Gates was highly impressed by her. He commended her confidence. Arfa asked her many questions, like why many people could not pass this certification. Why females are not working in the IT field? She also suggested that there should be gender equality in large corporations.
An Icon In Pakistan
When she came back to Pakistan, she was an icon.
Arfa Karim was celebrated and admired everywhere. This young girl was invited to many events and she delivered keynote speeches everywhere.
She was also awarded by the President and Prime minister. She is notably the youngest recipient of the Pride of Performance award in Pakistan. In 206, she was invited by Microsoft to be their keynote speaker in Barcelona.
Arfa Karim had big dreams and ambitions of going to an IVY league university. She had a dream of building a Silicon Valley in Pakistan.
As a young girl, she dreamed of making it big and doing more for her country but maybe Faith had something else planned.
Arfa Karim Death
Sadly, on the 14 of January 2012, at the age of 16, she passed away due to cardiac arrest.
Her death was a great loss for this country and the world of technology. In her memory, the government of Pakistan established the Arfa Karim Technology Park in Lahore, which is a state-of-the-art facility for the promotion of IT education and research in Pakistan and now the brightest minds are training in this center.
