Indian Farmer Protests: A Chaos To Unfold
As the election season unfolds in India we witness a lot that is happening there. Indian farmer protests are something that has taken the heat over the past couple of days. India farmer protests aren’t new, but the matter being brought up after a long time and that too in elections, is concerning for the incumbent government.
Here is all that you need to know about the Indian farmer protest.
2024 Indian Farmer Protests
The 2024 Indian farmer protest is ongoing and started on the morning of 13 February 2024 to demand the government’s guarantee on assured floor prices or minimum support prices (MSP) for crop production of the 2020-2021 Indian farmer protests.
The Indian farmer protests went on to march to the national capital, Dehli after many negotiations were done between the farmer’s leaders and the government officials on 12 February, which went on until late but yielded no result.
With tens of thousands of farmers protesting with their tractors to the capital city, the police sealed the borders and placed barricades to prevent the farmers from entering the capital city. Tear gases and water cannons were used at some borders to disperse the entire crowd.
Huge cement boulders with spikes on tops, barbed wire, and metal blocks were used to barricade the border points. Section 144 was imposed for a month preventing the gathering of three or more people. The government of India wants to avoid all the violence created during protests in 2021.
India Farmer Protest And Social Media
Social media major X (formerly Twitter) has admitted to taking down accounts and posts related to Indian farmer protests. The site also claimed it took down the pages after the Indian government sent them “executive orders”
The orders were “subject to potential penalties, including imprisonment” X said in a statement, adding that it disagreed with these actions.
Demands Of Indian Farmers
Apparently, according to the farmers, these demands were not met by the government. Following are some important demands that the farmers have presented;
1. Minimum Support Price (MSP) Guarantee
The farmers are demanding the enactment of a law that ensures and guarantees a minimum price for all crops. This will help them with their stability.
2. Debt Waiver
The implementation of the Swaminath Commison’s recommendation is sought to provide debt waivers to farmers. All debts of the farmers above Rs 10,000 to be waived worth Rs 18.4 lakh crore.
3. Land Acquisition Compensation
Famers demand more compensation for land acquired by various authorities for developmental projects also they seek the reservation of 10% residential plots.
4. Pension For Farmers And Farmer Labourers
Furthermore, another demand was regarding the allocation of pensions for farmers and farmer labourers.
5. Compensation Of Lost Lives During 2020-2021 Farmer Protests
On the other hand, there was another demand. This demand was severely important. This was regarding the compensation given to families who lost their loved ones. Furthermore, this demand also includes giving jobs to one family member.
6. Protection Of Indigenous Peoples Rights
Furthermore, there was a very important demand. The farmers moreover seek protection for land, forests and water resources belonging to tribal communities.
Death And Injuries
After the re-ignition of the Indian farmer protests, many injuries were reported. With tens of thousands of farmers protesting with their tractors to the capital city, the police sealed the borders and placed barricades to prevent the farmers from entering the capital city. Tear gases and water cannons were used at some borders to disperse the entire crowd.
Five farmers died during the protests at the Shambu and Khanauri borders between February 16 and 23. Three deaths were attributed to cardiac arrest.
