Cipher Case: A Trial Hurried Is Buried

The Cipher case has arguably been one of the country’s most famous and discussed cases. It’s going to be a year and during the past year we have seen this case reach many trials closely as we all have assessed it seems like this case at one point became more important than anything.

What Is The Infamous Cipher Case? 

The Cipher case started in 2022 when Imran Khan’s regime was ousted. It was then that Imran Khan waved a letter at a PTI rally, saying he had evidence that an international conspiracy was hatched to topple his government.

Imran Khan said this while reading his speech “Foreign funding has been used to change the government. Money is coming from abroad and people inside the country are being used. Some of them are unaware they are being used and some are intentionally using this money against us.” this was apparently what he said in his famous dharna and it spread like wildfire. 

Now, this letter was shared subsequently with the the previous members of the cabinets in a very hurried meeting. This letter was also shown on TV. Imran Khan then called some media anchors and journalists where he mentioned that the “tone of the letter and the language in which it was converted was very threatening and arrogant.” He later asserted that Pakistan would face dire consequences if the no-confidence motion failed.

As we saw the no-confidence motion moving against Imran Khan, he in an apparent slip of the tongue mentioned the United States as the country behind the letter, only to quickly correct and say that it was some other country and not the United States. 

As we saw things progress we also saw that Imran Khan was removed from office in April 2022  making him the first prime minister to be removed by such a move but not the first prime minister to be removed during his governance. 

It later emerged that the conversation that set off the so-called scandal took place on March 7 at a Farewell lunch for the then Pakistan ambassador Asad Majeed Khan at his residence which is also known as the Pakistan House.

It was later in September 2022 when multiple audios were released in which multiple audios of many politicians were released. It was later mentioned in the clip where the former premier is saying that we could play the threat and oust the government 

The Beginning Of Court Proceedings 

It was in August 2023 when official court proceedings started as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIR) registered a case against him and Shah Mehmood Qureshi under the Official Secrets Act. 

Now this FIR said both Imran Khan and Qureshi and other associates were involved in the communication of the information contained in a secret cipher by twisting facts to achieve their ulterior motives and personal gains. 

Latest Developments In The Cipher Case

Now that we are here after one year, we can see major relief, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday acquitted PTI founder Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the Cipher case. 

In recent developments, we can see that the chief IHC Justice Amer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb announced the short verdict after accepting the appeals of the former premier and diplomat against the convictions in the case. 

In the same way, it was reported that the duo will not be released from prison due to Imran’s iddat case while Qureshi was arrested in a recent May 9 case. The iddat case was transferred to another judge while Shah Mehmood Qureshi is still on physical remand till June 5 (Wednesday) 

A statement was later given by PTI’s spokesperson Raoof Hasan where he said “It is a big day for the leader and the party. A fake, frivolous and fraudulent case is sent packing by IHC. Other cases will also meet Waterloo very soon. Khan will step out as the undisputed leader that he is!”
