Nevertheless, Morgan has not been approved as the First Minister as we speak now. She still has to seek the permission of the Senedd, which is on its August break until September. If the assembly is recalled earlier, Morgan could take up her new position earlier, and carry on the work of the Welsh government based in Cardiff.
Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
Thus, the promotion of Morgan to leadership occurs at a time when the Welsh Labour Party has had its ordeal. The party has been split over the acceptance of a £200 000 donation from one convicted of criminal activities regarding environmental matters, forcing a vote of no confidence and subsequently, the resignation of Gething. Still, these challenges led to Morgan’s identification as the unity candidate; indeed, he secured unanimous support from other possible contenders for the leadership post.
As a devolved nation, the Welsh government has limited powers on specific issues, these include; transport, environment, health, and education. The development of responsibilities mentioned above will be in the hands of a new leader – Morgan who will guide Wales to a new phase of its existence.
