Ichra bazar Incident: Girl in Arabic Print Shirt Saved By Punjab Police
Ichra bazar Incident
LAHORE: In the crowded Ichra bazar Incident here on Sunday, prompt police action prevented a charged mob from attacking a teenage girl wearing a dress with Arabic calligraphy printed on it, accusing her of blasphemy.
When someone claimed that the girl’s dress bore Quranic verses, the situation became the Ichra Bazar Incident. Convincing the mob that it was merely an Arabic calligraphy print, a few store owners supported the girl and gave her sanctuary in one of their establishments.
In the Ichra Bazar incident the majority of those charged in the mob, according to eyewitnesses, were either customers, guests, or bystanders. The clothing vendors who saved the girl were aware of the Arabic calligraphy-printed clothing that was sold in the market.
A video clip that has gone viral on social media depicts a girl hiding in a store, trembling in fear of being attacked by the mob on charges of blasphemy—an accusation that has led to numerous public lynchings in the past across the nation. In the video, the young woman denied the accusations that she had insulted religion, claiming that the Arabic calligraphy on her clothing was a common practice in Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and that she had not done anything malicious.
After the police team in the Ichra Bazar incident dispersed the crowd, some officers placed the girl under protective custody and moved her to the police station amid increased security. Meanwhile, some police officials reached the spot and, sensing that it had turned into a sensitive issue, reported it to their high-ups, who ordered them to act quickly and rescue the girl to avoid any untoward incidents. When senior police officers arrived at the police station, they too wanted to know more about the incident. After looking over the dress, they informed the accused crowd that the girl had not disobeyed or insulted the faith.
Why Do We See Incidents Like These Now and Then?
There is no denying that we see incidents like these now and then. It is saddening that incidents like these are nothing new in this country. From Mashal Khan to so many others who have been mercilessly killed and brutally murdered because of this. But what might be the reason for it?
The main reason we all suppose is nothing but the famous blasphemy law. Over the years we have seen the worst coming out of this law. From people taking laws into their own hands and lynching innocent people, this law has killed many. The sad part is that it’s been many years and we still haven’t seen anything happening from higher authorities.
It’s saddening how Pakistan was formed on one principle which was to protect all lives and to form a separate nation for Muslims, yet we see nothing but cultural and religious disparity. Our great founder was clear about the rights of minorities yet it’s been more than 70 years and we don’t see anything. Our people are still targeted and our minorities are neglected. How many more lives will we claim that our laws do not protect the innocent? How many more blasphemy cases till our religious scholars sit down for a consensus?
Are Our Higher Authorities Responsible?
There isn’t a single answer to this question. There are many layers to this problem. One of them has to be our authorities and the existing law which fails to protect its people. The other one has to be our religious consensus and religious scholars.
Our religious scholars are equally to be blamed for it as they for years have been propagating crimes like this. Blasphemy law is here because it is supported by many religious scholars if not all who support the killing of innocent lives.
