June: Men’s Mental Health Month
We have always been about mental health. With the advancement of technology, we have always pressed on how important it is to take care of your mental health and while we are talking about mental health, June is here, meaning it’s men’s Mental Health Month.
While we are all about mental health, do you think that men’s mental health gets the same podium as everybody else? Well, here is more to it!
Men’s Mental Health Month
June is recognised to be the Men’s Mental Health Month Awareness month. A lot of us might find ourselves in the same dilemma where we question why we need a special month for men’s mental health. The answer to this question isn’t simple, it is way more complex than we think.
Conversations about Men’s mental health have always been stigmatised a lot in our society. From keeping these conversations under the rug to simply ignoring them, men’s mental health has never been our favourite subject, unfortunately. This is especially very true for toxic masculinity which can make it very difficult for men’s mental health to emerge.
Why Is It Important To Talk About Men’s Mental Health?
It was reported that out of every 10 men, at least 5 are depressed. Over the years the male suicide ratio has only gone up now this means that more than four times as many men as women die by suicide. Moreover, suicide has become the seventh biggest cause of suicide in men.
These figures are very alarming and as we speak of it there are many men out there who are dealing with depression as it continues to only grow. According to psychologists and doctors, men shy away from reporting their mental illnesses and yes, there are many reasons for it.
Therefore, it is extremely important to talk and constantly speak about the struggles of men and raise our voices for men’s mental health awareness, especially in a society like ours.
Desi Society And Men’s Mental Health
There is no doubt that our desi society has always been one of the reasons why men’s mental health awareness was always denied the importance of a spotlight. It is because of our society that men’s mental health is still struggling to come out.
As someone who lives in this country, I have seen personally how men in this country are pressured to put on a strong suit for the sake of family.
Society’s Expectations
There are certain expectations that our society has always imposed on our men. These expectations are always to be strong, that crying is a weakness and that men are supposed to provide for the family. Over the years, this ideology has always grown as we have seen men who refused to express their emotions because they were conditioned to think that it was not good and that it made them weak.
“Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota Hain”
We all must have heard the infamous line that goes “mard ko dard nahi hota” but in reality, it is the opposite. Men feel the same emotions as all of us. Men feel hurt. Men cry. Men get hurt too but this one sentence has ruined more lives than we can imagine.
It was because of this infamous line, that made men believe that maybe as men they are never allowed to express their emotions and that their mental health struggles don’t count.
How To Support Men’s Mental Health Awareness
While it is first of all very important to realise how men’s mental health is crucial the first step is to always speak about it. Here are a few ways in which you can support men with their mental health;
1. Talk about it in public
2. Organize events and charities
3. Talk to the men in your family
