What Is Wrong With Pakistani Drama Industry?
Pakistani drama industry is one of the longest and famous running industries in the world. With its compelling storylines, twists and turns, attractive plots and great acting, the Pakistani drama industry has always given us the best content. But recently, we have been seeing a change in the industry. Our regressive script or the depiction of “angry young men,” has raised many eyebrows. What went wrong with our Pakistani drama industry?
The 90’s Pakistani Drama Industry
Having grown up in the 90’s we all must have witnessed some groundbreaking work within the industry. Now be it the remarkable acting of Marina Khan in Dhoop Kinare or the exceptional direction of Shoaib Mansoor, the Pakistani drama industry was delivering the best of content in the 90’s.
It seemed to set a higher standard with every play and drama, so much so that the daily viewership back in the 90s was 100% as families gathered around to celebrate art. It was a beautiful and creative time—a time when the Pakistani drama industry was not only thriving but was raising the bar. Pakistani Drama industry has been given an extremely tough time even Bollywood. The crème de la crème of the industry bought only the best for the audiences. It was also that time when the Pakistani drama industry started to export its creative streak to other countries and delivered it to more than 160 countries around the globe.
Pakistani drama industry was always ahead of its time, with actors like Bushra Ansari, Behroz Sabzwari, Marina Khan, and many others our industry was always thriving therefore leading to only the highest level of entertainment. Furthermore, it was a time when the Pakistani Drama industry was great at touching sensitive topic and social topics. But why aren’t we making entertainment like this anymore?
The Foolish Pursuit For TRPS
If there is one thing that has been in the way of our Pakistani drama industry, then it has to be our TRP’s
TRPS often referred to as ratings is something that very much determines the fate of our dramas these days. It is something that has been a huge hindrance. Directors and producers particularly, like to invest in dramas that yield them good ratings. With good ratings come good money and fame eventually. In this unseen pursuit of TRP’s drama writers and directors are more concerned with making money rather than creating good content.
The race for the so-called “trending show” has very much ruined our drama industry.
Rise Of Alpha Male
Recently there has been a rise of the so-called “Alpha Male” in our Pakistani dram industry.
These alpha males are often portrayed by these actors who are considered to be inspiring g figures within the community, with muscular bodies and extremely bad temperaments who are extremely misogynistic, these male figures are looked upon by many young men.
It has to be one of the many reasons for our Pakistani drama industry’s downfall. The representation of these men is highly problematic for our society.
Obsession With Damsels In Distress
The damsels in distress is something that we are also struggling with in our drama industry.
Our drama industry is very much obsessed with the representation of young women who are often portrayed to be very weak, fragile and often taunted and beaten by their husbands and mothers-in-law. Furthermore, it is very problematic for our younger generation and girls who look up to these characters.
Conclusion
In the end, what we recognise as the main problem with the industry is not just the representation of one but also the fact that we are not coming up with new ideas and concepts. We still linger and fixtae on to age old ideas and stories that do not make any sense.
