Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha of Rawalpindi resigned on Saturday after acknowledging that the elections in his division had been “rigged.”
Recalling his attempt at suicide earlier in the day because of extreme remorse, Chattha made this revelation during a news conference at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
He said he was accepting responsibility for the incident and that he was turning himself in to the police.
In addition to expressing regret for pressuring his subordinates to commit crimes, Chattha acknowledged that victorious candidates in the Rawalpindi division were manipulated to lose 13 seats.
The commissioner declared that Sikandar Sultan Raja, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), and Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa were all guilty of electoral malpractice and should be punished, even to death.
Chattha revealed that he chose to reveal the truth after making an attempt on his life during the Fajr prayer. He acknowledged that the betrayal of trust toward the people and the nation had given him nightmares.
According to Chattha, the army held fair elections and a new poll was not necessary.
Chattha reported that he saw the presiding officers sobbing due to the circumstances.
After making his confession, security personnel detained Chattha and took him to a secret location.
The districts of Attock, Murree, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, and Chakwal are included in the Rawalpindi division.
PTI REQUIRES AN ANALYZATION OF ALLEGATIONS
A prompt investigation into the accusations made by Rawalpindi commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha was urged by PTI leader Barrister Gohar. He claimed that the commissioner’s admission had grave consequences and that it was time to identify the winners of these rigged elections.
He stated that his party believed that district and returning officers need to be recruited from the legal profession.
According to Barrister Gohar, the Rawalpindi division’s elections need to be ruled invalid. He claimed Form-45 should be the foundation for election outcomes.
ANNOUNCES PROBE AND REJECTS ALLEGATIONS FROM COMMISSIONER ECP
The Pakistani Election Commission announced that it will launch an investigation into the claims of results manipulation as soon as possible.
The commission categorically denied the accusations and declared that no commissioner had a direct hand in how the elections were run. According to him, the commissioner was not a returning officer, district returning officer, or presiding officer.
According to the statement, Rawalpindi Commissioner of had not received any instructions from any election commission officer regarding the tampering of results.
RANA SANAULLAH CLAIMING MENTALLY UNSTABLE COMMISSIONER
In response to the accusations made by the commissioner of Rawalpindi, PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah declared Rawalpindi Commissioner to be mentally ill.
He claimed that contrary to what the bureaucrat had suggested, election tampering was not capital punishment.

He stated that he was turning himself in to the police, taking responsibility for the incident.
Chattha expressed remorse for forcing his subordinates to engage in wrongdoing and admitted that winning candidates were made to lose on 13 seats in the Rawalpindi division.
The commissioner accused Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja of being complicit in the rigging and asserted that he, along with the CEC and Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, deserved punishment, even the death penalty, for their injustice.
Chattha disclosed that after attempting suicide during the Fajr prayer, he decided to come forward with the truth. He confessed to experiencing sleepless nights due to the betrayal of trust toward the people and the country.
Chattha said army conducted elections in a fair manner and there was no need for reelection.
Chattha noted that he witnessed presiding officers crying over the situation.
Following his confession, Chattha was arrested by security forces and taken to an undisclosed location.
The Rawalpindi division comprises Attock, Murree, Rawalpindi, Jhelum and Chakwal districts.
PTI DEMANDS INQUIRY INTO ALLEGATIONS
PTI leader Barrister Gohar demanded an immediately inquiry into the allegations leveled by Rawalpindi commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha. He said the commissioner’s confession had serious repercussions and the beneficiaries of these manipulated elections should also be revealed.
He said his party was of the opinion that returning officers and district returning officers should be appointed from the judiciary.
Barrister Gohar said elections should be declared null and void in Rawalpindi division. He said election results should be based on Form-45.
ECP REJECTS COMMISSIONER’S ALLEGATIONS, ANNOUNCES PROBE
Taking prompt notice of the allegations of results manipulation, the Election Commission of Pakistan said the commission will hold an immediate inquiry into the matter.
The commission strongly rejected the allegations and said any commissioner had no direct role in conduct of elections. He said the Rawalpindi Commissioner was neither a presiding officer nor a returning or district returning officer.
The spokesperson said any officer or official of election commission had issued no direction to Rawalpindi commissioner for result tempering.
