What Are Big Fat Weddings?
A big fat wedding is a colloquial term used to describe a grand and extravagant wedding ceremony that involves elaborate decorations, a large number of guests, luxurious venues, and elaborate rituals or celebrations. The term is commonly associated with weddings that are characterised by opulence, luxury, and excess in spending and festivities.
So why are big fat weddings a big deal? While it’s always fun to watch these weddings and dance in these weddings it has raised major concerns over the past few years. A major segment is totally against these big fat weddings. Here is why many argue about these big fat weddings.
Unislamic At Its Best
One of the best arguments that many present when it comes to the big fat weddings is that in our society, it is extremely unIslamic. Islam is a religion of simplicity and it encourages its followers to spend money wisely. Unfortunately, the concept of Big fat weddings is very unIslamic as it promotes spending money on things for no reason.
Our prophet very well and aptly instructed us on how to get married but with weddings like these, it is very easy to spend so much money on this. Islam is a religion of peace and simplicity and these weddings are contrary to the teachings of Islam. These weddings are also the reason why we see rich and poor disparity in our society.
It may be the reason why there is so many crimes in our country.
The “Flaunt” Factor
The most important thing in big fat weddings is the flaunt factor and how big the wedding will be. Will the resort be big? Will the venue be big? these are some of the questions that are being asked by people. People spend lavishly on weddings just so that everyone is happy. Weddings have unfortunately become a growing industry in our country where many people simply get married to flaunt their wealth.
Food Wastage
While we are on the subject of big fat weddings, it is also pertinent to notice that these weddings are the point of food wastage. Many people spend money on highly expensive food, and with that said, so much is also wasted. Food wastage is a major problem at these weddings.
People often talk about the quality of food and hence many people spend way too much on food which is eventually wasted.
Annually if we see, then more than 20 tons of food is wasted every year. This means that more than 10,000 poor and malnourished people can eat food which is very badly wasted.
Rich Poor Segregation
With the rise of these types of weddings, there has been a divide within our society as well. The lower or the poor segment also initiates the rich. It has put a huge strain on them where they want to compete with the rich. In the society where we live where it’s very easy for the rich to flaunt their wealth, we sometimes undermine the effect of our actions.
Furthermore, this money can be spent on other things that can help poor people in our society. However, it is lavishly and poorly spent on a wedding function that will last for a day. While there are so many existing problems in our society most of them can be very easily solved with money. And while this money is spent on lavish and on big fat weddings, there is no way that the problems happening right now in our country will in any way be solved.
With these big fat weddings, they spend money so lavishly that often the ones who need it are left behind.
