Indian Elections: Wins, Losses and Surprises
We all witnessed one of the greatest Indian elections on the planet, with the world’s largest democracy in the world, we all waited with bated breath as we watched these elections unfold. These elections were not just elections, they were much more than that and as we watch these elections unfolding.
Here is everything that you need to know about it!
Worlds Biggest Indian Elections
Indian elections 2024 were one of the biggest Indian elections that we have seen. This election started in the initial weeks of April and was divided into seven weeks because of the enormity of the country and this was done to elect almost 543 members in Lok Sabha. This was done to fill the seats and the main result was announced on 4 June to form the 18th Lok Sabha.
It was categorically reported that more than 968 million people have voted this year out of 1.4 billion people. This means that up to 70% of the country voted this year, furthermore 628 million voters participated in the elections and this also means that almost 312 million of them were women this makes India the highest-ever participation by women voters. This election was the largest and it also surpassed the previous election and lasted for more than 40 days making it 44 days.
Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) And Its Dominance
As we expected, the BJP was in all its glory. We started seeing the campaigns very early on as we witnessed people from various states coming out in support of the BJP. This year as the results poured in we saw how BJP won 240 seats Indian elections which made them fall short of the 272 mark that signifies a majority in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament, which has 543 in all. With its allies, we can see that the BJP has secured a majority and is still winning 293 seats as a total.
BJP Hold In Utter Pradesh
With that said so, we all saw a sharp rise in the popularity of the BJP in Utter Pradesh. As we all know, in 2014 and 2019 the BJP won more than 71 and 62 seats in total respectively which propelled them and took them to secure a place in Dehli. But 2024 looks very different as of now, we can see very clearly that BJP has secured only 33 seats and it is a massive shock.
Furthermore Indian elections, we can see its allies taking an edge with this as they lost in the Faizabad constituency where recently Modi integrated the Ayodha Temple which was also seen as a centrepiece for Modi’s regime.
BJP Hold In Kerala
In a historic turn of events, we all saw the BJP win by a great margin of 74,886 voters in the south region of Kerala. In this region, Hindus make up about 55% of the population, while Muslims and Christians make up about 18% respectively.
Congress And Big Wins
In West Bengal, we saw Congress taking the lead. Similarly, we saw how Maharashtra was lost to Congress and its partners this time. The INIDA alliance which includes Congress and its other subgroups won almost 30 of the 40 seats in Maharashtra. While BJP only won nine seats this time.
BJP And It’s Use Of Religious Sentiments
The number one tool played this time was the religion tool by the BJP. It was something that led to the historic win in Kerala. Also, it was something that made them win big time in this election.
The use of this tool garnered a massive population and also created a divide in the country. It made them win largely because of their Hindu supporter and because of this, it also made them lose out on a massive population that was non-Hindu.
Conclusion
In the end, as we see this, we see BJP winning this Indian elections and only time will tell whether it was a good decision or not. But as we all saw, it was recorded how previously BJP propagated hate crimes in the country and started an anti-Pakistan sentiment.
